Vomiting

Vomiting is most commonly caused by a stomach or intestinal virus.  It usually stops in 12 to 24 hours and may be accompanied by diarrhea, fever, nausea, or abdominal cramping.  This virus is generally contagious to others.

Home Care Advice:
When your child vomits 2 or more times, offer small amounts of fluids frequently.

Infants and toddlers may be given Pedialyte for up to 12 hours if breastmilk or formula is not tolerated.  Pedialyte popsicles may also be given.  Older children may have clear liquids such as ginger ale, Sprite, or caffeine-free Coke.  DO NOT offer water to infants under six months old.  Offer food as the child tolerates.

If vomiting continues despite these steps or if there is high fever, no urination in eight hours, absence of tears, or a dry mouth, or if the vomit is green when there has been no green liquid intake, please call our office.
